You may not remember what a Bowtruckle is, but if you’ve seen Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, you’ve definitely seen one!
So one of my friends is throwing a huge Harry Potter party, and I’ll be going as Newt Scamander. So I took it upon myself to go all out!
I needed a Bowtruckle (a tree guardian creature from the Harry Potter universe that made it’s appearance in Fantastic Beasts), so I made one!
First I gathered my supplies:
I got some floral wiring, pipe cleaner, floral tape, fake leaves, and some beads.
Then I started out with a basic outline of the body:
Then I gave the body shape and added the leaves.
After that, I gave the body more bulk with the pipe cleaner.
After that, I used floral tape to cover the entire thing. If you’ve never worked with floral tape, in order for it to stick, you have to stretch it out – then it will stick to itself. I found it easier to cut out foot long strips. Just make sure that at the end of the strips stretch and tear the end so that it is nice and sticky so it won’t unwind.
In the end, I hot glued some plastic beads on for the eyes, and here’s the finished product!
Here’s an updated pic:

Then I basically made a mini version with just pipe cleaner for kids to make at my friend’s Harry Potter party. He kind of looks like an angry little ninja plant, but oh well!
To go with the mini Bowtruckle they’ll be making, I made a little handout about these little creatures. Here’s the video of part of the process:
And here’s the final product:
